Brewing Change to Support Malaysia’s Water Security

Water is essential to life and economic prosperity, yet Malaysia faces a worrying forecast.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of the world’s population could face severe water scarcity by 2025—and Malaysia is no exception. With 97% of our water supply sourced from rivers, the quality of these waterways is critical. However, a study by the Department of Environment (DOE) found that one in four rivers monitored—out of more than 600—are polluted.

Compounding this challenge is our national water footprint. At 2,103 m³ per capita annually, it far exceeds the global average of 1,385 m³. Over a quarter of that is used by industry and households, placing industries in a key position of responsibility and opportunity to drive more sustainable water practices.

The question is – given Malaysia’s significant water footprint and the importance of water sustainability, what measures can industries adopt to ensure a sustainable water future?

Pollution Prevention and Management

Pollution management is essential. As industries continue to grow and evolve, they must take responsibility for preventing and minimising water pollution—an effort that should come from both top-down regulations and bottom-up engagement.

At HEINEKEN Malaysia, our approach is guided by our global sustainability strategy, Brew a Better World (BaBW) 2030. We have embedded holistic sustainability practices across our entire value chain, from Barley to Bar—making sustainability not just a goal but a way of operating.

We have upgraded our wastewater treatment plant to ensure 100% compliance with DOE standards, treating wastewater beyond regulatory requirements. Treated water is reused for gardening and cleaning, while biogas generated from the plant contributes 5% to our thermal energy needs.

Preventing pollution doesn’t stop at infrastructure. It requires regular monitoring and maintenance. Industries should initiate pollution reduction programmes, implement robust water management systems, and ensure responsible effluent treatment.

Since 2014, our consistent efforts have led to a 29% improvement in water efficiency, and we’re targeting 2.6 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of product by 2030. This has been achieved through technological upgrades, water reuse practices, and ongoing employee awareness campaigns.

Embracing Guided Self-Regulation

In the pursuit of environmental sustainability, Guided Self-Regulation (GSR) initiatives have emerged as an effective tool. These initiatives encourage businesses to take responsibility beyond statutory requirements, fostering a culture of proactive environmental stewardship. Self-monitoring enhances accountability, supports long-term sustainability, and empowers industries to lead the shift towards a more sustainable future.

For HEINEKEN Malaysia, this also means looking beyond our brewery operations to support the wider ecosystem. We’ve made watershed health a priority—aligned with the principles of the UN Global Compact’s Water Resilience Coalition and the outcomes of the recent UN Water Conference.

Since 2020, we’ve fully balanced the water used in our products through external water stewardship initiatives. For every litre of water we use, we replenish 1.5 litres back into local watersheds. Central to this commitment is our flagship Working Actively Through Education and Rehabilitation (W.A.T.E.R) Project, led by the SPARK Foundation—HEINEKEN Malaysia’s corporate social responsibility arm established in 2007. In partnership with the Global Environment Centre (GEC), government agencies, and local communities, we drive long-term efforts to rehabilitate rivers and raise awareness of water conservation.

In 2023 alone, our water balancing efforts reached 223% of our target—demonstrating meaningful, measurable progress. These outcomes are quantified and verified by LimnoTech, a leading water sciences and environmental engineering firm in the United States of America.

Enhancing Partnerships and Community Involvement

Water sustainability cannot be achieved in isolation. Building strong multi-stakeholder partnerships with governments, NGOs, and communities is crucial for scaling impact.

Since 2007, HEINEKEN Malaysia has partnered with the GEC, supported by 26 government agencies, to empower 22 local communities. These communities now serve as river rangers, helping to train and build the capabilities of others living near rivers.

Community engagement is critical to long-term sustainability. Industries should not only support river care but also create opportunities for communities to take the lead. At HEINEKEN Malaysia, we do this through practical, nature-based solutions.

One such example is the rehabilitation of Sungai Way River—a severely polluted urban river we began restoring in 2012. As a result, the river’s water quality improved from Class IV–V (extremely polluted, not suitable for living organisms) to Class III (suitable for living organisms). Thanks to collective effort, aquatic life has returned, biodiversity has improved, and the local community has been empowered to maintain and protect the ecosystem.

Reforestation of degraded peatlands is another effective measure. We have reforested three hectares of peatland, significantly improving soil water retention and biodiversity while actively involving employees and community members. Complementing these efforts, we have installed 29 rainwater harvesting systems across Malaysia—benefiting over 23 communities in Selangor and providing drinking water for 5,000 villagers in East Malaysia.

A Call for Collective Action

The growing water challenge demands more than awareness—it calls for collective action from all of us. From investing in improved treatment systems to supporting watershed health and engaging with communities, industries have a key role to play in advancing water sustainability.

This World Water Day, let’s commit—not just to better water practices but to tangible action. Let’s work together for healthy watersheds and nature and protect Malaysia’s water future.
